What Makes iPhone X Different Than All Mobile Phones in the Market Today?

The iPhone X was unveiled on 12 September 2017 and available for pre-orders on 27 October. The iPhone X is now the hottest selling mobile phone on the market with a wait time that has reached six weeks. So what makes the iPhone X (pronounced as iPhone Ten) such a hit when Apple just recently launched the iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus?

Visually, the iPhone X is Apple’s most impressive futuristic design to date. It has a gorgeous 5.8-inch edge-to-edge OLED screen (designed by Apple and manufactured by Samsung) on the front and a stainless-steel frame. While it is not any bigger than an iPhone 8 and it does not come close to the dimensions of the iPhone 8 Plus, it does look like a big screen in a small form with practically everything on display. And it’s HDR-ready.

Apple’s iPhone engineers got rid of the home screen button, which may take some getting used to for most smartphone users. They also introduced its latest technology on the iPhone X --- the Face ID. This is a facial recognition feature that unlocks the phone just by shining the IR on your face as you look at the phone. This replaces the  fingerprint IDs of the previous models.

If you’re a big selfie fan, you’ll have fun using the latest Animoji and Portrait mode functions of the iPhone X’s camera. All of the sensors that make Face ID possible are also used to create Animojis, which are emojis that move and mimic your facial expressions. The TrueDepth camera in portrait mode allows you to take portrait shots with blurred backgrounds and use Portrait Lighting on the front-facing camera. Previous iPhone models did not have that. On top of all that fun and awesome resolution, the iPhone X’s dual camera has telephoto portrait lens which has a better aperture than the iPhone 8 Plus. Both rear cameras have optical image stabilization, allowing you to take clearer pictures even in darker conditions.

“The notch”, which houses the front-facing camera and other sensors, are located at the top. With its edge-to-edge screen, it may take some time to get used to having the notch constantly “there”.  It’s really just a minor thing and not too annoying (even when watching videos in landscape mode), but you may find that some apps are not yet configured for the iPhone X.
The verdict? According to most first reviewers, there are still some quirks to the new iPhone X, like new gestures and swipes to learn, but the iPhone X’s new look and futuristic feel (plus the fun to be had with the Animoji function) are worth upgrading for.
