When Should You Upgrade Your Mobile Phone?

The mobile phone has become more of a necessity than a luxury in today’s technology-dependent society. When cellphones first came out, they were bulky and hardly portable, and they were only used for calls and text messages. We’ve come a long way since then with slimmer, sleeker, and more versatile smartphones that can, aside from the usual calls and texts, also play music, sync your calendar, act as virtual assistant, take photos and videos, play games, play music, monitor your heart rate, track your location, and lets you read or edit documents. At the rate that mobile phone technology develops, we’re hard-pressed to determine when exactly should we upgrade to a newer or the latest model smartphone.

So, when would be a good time to upgrade?
▢ Your phone’s screen is busted. Let’s start with the most obvious. When your touchscreen is slow to respond or when it is broken (literally) and has become a health hazard, you need to buy a new phone.

Your battery life doesn’t make it past brunch. With most mobile phone batteries lasting up to more than 24 hours, if yours needs a recharge before your first coffee break, you need to start comparing smartphone models.

Your phone refuses to update its operating system. Apple comes out with a new version of their iOS often, the latest being iOS 11. Android does, too. They just name them after desserts, with Android 8.0 Oreo being the newest sweet. So, if your iPhone is stuck in iOS 7 or iOS 8 or your Android smartphone is still with KitKat or Lollipop, it’s time to upgrade.

Your apps won’t work, the processing speed is barely faster than a speeding turtle, or your storage space has reached its limit. What good is a smartphone or an iPhone if none of the apps function properly or if they’re too slow to even be of any use?

Your photos appear grainy and shot in low resolution. Of course, mobile phones masquerade as cameras! (Or is it the other way around?) With a new phone, you get a better camera to take better selfies and videos.

You still flip your phone open to answer a call or dial using a keypad, instead of swiping and tapping (or even giving voice commands). It’s time to join the world where your phone can handle 4G or LTE connection instead of the GSM or 3G coverage. You’d find it very difficult to stay connected to anyone, especially with the soon-to-come 5G network.

If you find yourself ticking off these boxes, then you should consider upgrading your mobile phone. Whether you’re an Apple iPhone fan or prefer the Android interface, there are more advanced smartphones released practically every month. You just need to find the right one to fit your lifestyle and needs.
MetroSix.com carries a wide range of mobile phones from trusted brands like Apple, Samsung, Sony, Nokia/Microsoft, ASUS, LG, Blackberry, HTC, OnePlus, Motorola, Huawei, Cat, and Xiaomi.

What Makes iPhone X Different Than All Mobile Phones in the Market Today?

The iPhone X was unveiled on 12 September 2017 and available for pre-orders on 27 October. The iPhone X is now the hottest selling mobile phone on the market with a wait time that has reached six weeks. So what makes the iPhone X (pronounced as iPhone Ten) such a hit when Apple just recently launched the iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus?
iPhone_X_header.png

Visually, the iPhone X is Apple’s most impressive futuristic design to date. It has a gorgeous 5.8-inch edge-to-edge OLED screen (designed by Apple and manufactured by Samsung) on the front and a stainless-steel frame. While it is not any bigger than an iPhone 8 and it does not come close to the dimensions of the iPhone 8 Plus, it does look like a big screen in a small form with practically everything on display. And it’s HDR-ready.
iPhone_X_Design.png

Apple’s iPhone engineers got rid of the home screen button, which may take some getting used to for most smartphone users. They also introduced its latest technology on the iPhone X --- the Face ID. This is a facial recognition feature that unlocks the phone just by shining the IR on your face as you look at the phone. This replaces the  fingerprint IDs of the previous models.

iPhone_X_Face_ID.png

If you’re a big selfie fan, you’ll have fun using the latest Animoji and Portrait mode functions of the iPhone X’s camera. All of the sensors that make Face ID possible are also used to create Animojis, which are emojis that move and mimic your facial expressions. The TrueDepth camera in portrait mode allows you to take portrait shots with blurred backgrounds and use Portrait Lighting on the front-facing camera. Previous iPhone models did not have that. On top of all that fun and awesome resolution, the iPhone X’s dual camera has telephoto portrait lens which has a better aperture than the iPhone 8 Plus. Both rear cameras have optical image stabilization, allowing you to take clearer pictures even in darker conditions.
iPhone_X_Animojis.png

“The notch”, which houses the front-facing camera and other sensors, are located at the top. With its edge-to-edge screen, it may take some time to get used to having the notch constantly “there”.  It’s really just a minor thing and not too annoying (even when watching videos in landscape mode), but you may find that some apps are not yet configured for the iPhone X.
The verdict? According to most first reviewers, there are still some quirks to the new iPhone X, like new gestures and swipes to learn, but the iPhone X’s new look and futuristic feel (plus the fun to be had with the Animoji function) are worth upgrading for.

A Beginner’s Guide to Media Streaming

How to Watch TV Programs and Movies Without a Cable TV Subscription
Media streaming is watching your favorite TV programs or movies over the Internet, usually with a streaming media player like a TV box or an Android box. This media player is what connects your TV or state-of-the-art home theater system to the Internet, allowing you to access the content you want from online services. These streaming media players like Apple TV, Roku, or UBOX are simple-looking devices that allow you to access thousands of TV shows and movies through various subscription services.
 Media Players

The term “streaming” is often used to refer to shared media where video and audio are played on one device but saved on another. A streaming media player acts like a faucet for media streaming. It accesses the file you want from a content delivery network and ‘streams’ it to your TV. The file does not need to be downloaded onto your local drive or device before you can watch it.
You also need a fast Internet connection (at least 2Mbps for standard resolution videos and over 3Mbps for HD videos). 4K streaming may even require you to have up to 25Mbps so the video doesn’t have to pause mid-stream as it buffers. (Buffering is several seconds of video that is streamed to your media player so that the video continues playing even if there’s an interruption of your internet connection.)
For a playback device to communicate with the media server, it must be compatible with either of two standards: DLNA, which ensures that your home networking devices communicate and share media so both the media server and the media must be DLNA certified, and UPnP (Universal Plug and Play), which is a more generic sharing solution that allows media servers to communicate with a compatible media player or TV or Android box.
If you already have a Smart TV, you may not need a separate streaming device. A Smart TV can connect to the Internet and run entertainment apps like Internet radio stations, launch web browsers, and access online media streaming services.
If you do not have a Smart TV, you will need a streaming media player, like the UBOX4 or Apple TV 4K. You will need to connect the media player to your TV, usually with an HDMI cable. You will also need to connect the media player to the Internet. Depending on the media player, you may be required to create an account. Some content providers are actually subscription services, and may require additional fees.
UBOX4 and Apple TV 4K

The advantage of having streaming media players is that they are often large and powerful enough to support game controllers and the different apps that give you access to hundreds, even thousands, of TV shows and movies through subscription services like Netflix, HBO GO and Hulu.

So how do you choose which media streaming device to buy? Stay tuned for our next blog posts where we compare the more popular media streaming players available.

iPhone X

iPhone X, the rumored Apple flagship iPhone for Apple’s 10th year anniversary has been announced in the recent Apple Special Event held on September 12, 2017 in Cupertino, California.

iphone-ten.png

Screen Shot 2017-09-13 at 3.01.07 PM.png
Called as the “iPhone of the future”, it looks very different from the previous iPhone models. It has an edge-to-edge display glass on front and back with a 5.8‑inch Super Retina display. This iPhone also has an OLED screen which supports HDR (both Dolby Vision and HDR10). As a result, it produces accurate, stunning colors, true blacks, high brightness, and a 1,000,000 to 1 contrast ratio. It's available in silver and space gray finish.

This iPhone model no longer has a Home button. A simple swipe from the bottom of the screen to the top quickly takes you to the Home menu. Aside from the swiping gesture function, the iPhone X uses Face ID which replaced the Touch ID. Just place the iPhone in front of your face to unlock it. What’s good about this is that the face data is stored in the device and not on the web or cloud. This new security feature is made possible by iOS 11 and A11 Bionic chip that has a new neural engine and computer vision array. This all‑new CPU is up to 70 percent faster than A10 Fusion.

Similar to the iPhone 7 Plus, the iPhone X has dual cameras at the back but with a larger and faster 12MP sensor. It has optical image stabilization and fast lenses. Its wide-angle and telephoto cameras enable optical zoom. It can also perform digital zoom of up to 10x for photos and 6x for videos.

Along with a nice camera comes a new added feature which is the Portrait mode wherein you can adjust the lighting effect on photos even before taking it.

Apple also introduced Animoji, which is animated emojis. The TrueDepth camera capture your facial expression and mirror it with an emoji.

Since Augmented Reality has become popular, Apple made sure to make this iPhone compatible with AR so you can experience AR games and apps.

Available storage capacities are 64GB and 256GB.

Same as the iPhone 7, this phone is also water and dust resistant but this model lasts up to 2 hours more. It also supports the Bluetooth 5 and LTE Advanced. And finally, this iPhone supports Qi wireless charging so no more charging cables.

iPhone X will be available for pre-orders on October 27, 2017 and will start shipping on November 3, 2017.
